6:30pmAdvent Carol Service
Our Advent services gradually intensify as the season moves forward. On 1st December, Advent Sunday, we will have celebrated the beginning of the season thoughtfully. Now on the Second Sunday of Advent, we turn it up a little with an Advent Carol Service. Choir carols and hymns special to this time of the year are interspersed with readings. This is a beautiful opportunity to focus on Advent itself and its own message before we begin to be completely caught up in the preparations for Christmas.

6:30pmA Service of Nine Lessons and Carols
This is the first of the church's five Christmas Carol services. It follows the pattern familiar to us from the Christmas Eve Carol Service at King's College Cambridge, introduced there in 1918 by its then Dean, Eric Milner White. It is now known throughout the world through the annual broadcasts by the BBC that began in 1928 and now reach many millions worldwide. The Priory Church has a special relationship with several livery companies and other City institutions, and we make a special invitation to these organizations to come to this service and the one on Tuesday, and we give them reserved seats. Most of the readings at these services are given by the current heads of these livery companies and institutions. There are also quite a lot of unreserved seats in the central part of the church, and many more in the ambulatory, and everyone is very welcome at both services.

Tue 17th Dec 2013 6:00pm S.Bartholomew the Great Service of Nine Lessons & Carols
This service is basically a repeat of the Sunday Carol Service described above. A further group of livery companies and City institutions come to this service and again they provide most of the readers. Although they have reserved seats, there are also many unreserved, and everyone is very welcome to join us at this service.

Thu 19th Dec 2013 6:00pm Carol Service: A Ceremony of Carols
This year marks the centenary of the birth of Benjamin Britten. Last year we devised a new form of Carol Service based around his much-loved work for upper voices and harp, A Ceremony of Carols, written in 1942, and we are repeating it this year. The individual movements of the suite are interspersed with Christmas hymns and a special set of readings. A Ceremony of Carols is Britten's most accessible and attractive choral work and the effect of the choristers and harp player performing this in candlelight from the sanctuary is magical.

6:30pmA Service of Nine Lessons and Carols
This Carol Service has a different set of carols from those last Sunday and Tuesday. The readings are also different, being the original set chosen by Bishop Benson of Truro (later Archbishop of Canterbury), who created the first sequence of Nine Lessons and Carols in 1880 on which Eric Milner White later based the service at Kings. It is said that the first service took place in a wooden shed acting as a temporary cathedral. The seating is all unreserved at this service, so to be sure of a seat in the central area you will need to arrive early!

Mon 23th Dec 2013 1:00pm Lunchtime Carol Service
This is a shorter Carol service with four readings interspersed with some choir carols and hymns. The whole thing is designed to fit conveniently into an office lunchtime. A modestly priced lunch is also available from the Cloister Café either before or after the service.
