St Bartholomew the Great is one of the most beautiful churches in the city of London, rich in history and a place of inspiration for many artists. It is a perfect place in which to host an Artist Residency, allowing an artist unlimited access to the church, free studio and exhibition space and the chance to reach a new audience.
Visitors can benefit from access to an artist at work and the chance to receive tuition if they wish. Art Workshops for local school children will take place, giving pupils the opportunity to visit and draw the church under the artist's guidance whilst, at the same time, learning some of the history of the church and the surrounding area. We are also developing links to provide art workshops for the long term patients from St Bartholomew Hospital.
Kay Hare is our first Artist in Residence and has already produced wonderful work. She is at the church most days and welcomes visitors! Please ask one of the vergers if you wish to meet her. Kay is happy to offer advice if you wish to sketch the church yourself. An exhibit of her work will be available soon.

Thoughts from Paradise
My first visit to St Bartholomew's was magical: oak doors yawned open to fairy-tale thoughts which escalated as the eyes gazed up the stone ribbing and focused on the cat sculptured into arches; reminiscent of ice cream. The air, slightly fragrant; a cocktail of sandalwood, flowers and musk. A maze of columns and openings seeded with icons, treasures and history. The stone walls echo landscapes of past, present and future shimmering with light; reflecting moving clouds. The pretty, tiled floor is hopscotched with sacred tombs displaying scriptures etched in stone; footsteps become deliberate and mindful. Candle flames dance in the rhythms of their passers by; creating feerique lighting. Rows of beech chairs face each other; peacefully inviting visitors to prayer whilst patiently awaiting their guests. Minds are emptied from heavy burdens; voices become whisperings of peace and hope. Countless levels of light meditate in the air encouraging moments of wonder. From the eaves there is space; mysterious and silent.
